The Best BBQ in Austin (that I've been to)

If you haven't heard of Austin's BBQ scene, I don't know where you have been. From the often long waits by the BBQ pits to the food that follows the saying "everything is bigger in Texas", BBQ is a staple of Texas culture. One good aspect of BBQ food is that it is usually mostly gluten-free; just ask about the sauce!

The Salt Lick

The Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX is an experience. While the BBQ is amazing, the true star of the restaurant is its location, taking you into the Texas Hill-Country. A few standouts include the Pork Ribs, the sides, the Sweet Tea, and the sight of the BBQ pits. The best part? Except for the bread and desserts, the menu is completely gluten-free. To find out more information about the restaurant and its gluten-free options, read the full review here.

Terry Black's BBQ

Just ignore the mac and cheese, the dessert, and the bread.

Big beef ribs, unlimited sweet tea, sausage, and a location near downtown make this BBQ restaurant a must-try. This BBQ spot is so well-beloved that Michelle Obama wrote the restaurant a letter after eating there with her staff. With GF options marked on the menu, this restaurant is satisfactory for gluten sensitivity restrictions.

Franklin's Barbecue

900 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702

While I haven't been to this restaurant in years, at a time before I was diagnosed with Celiac's Disease, the main thing I remember is the long waits and the brisket. The espresso BBQ sauce is apparently not gluten-free, but make sure to ask what is gluten-free before going. All of the sides (that aren't apparently filled with gluten) should be gluten-free, and I remember the food being good. Although I would recommend this place less due to its notorious long waits and food shortages, it is a good place to try if you have the time.

As of the time of posting this article, I haven't been to many BBQ restaurants while judging it on its gluten-free options and quality. However, I hope that this shortlist can help you explore and experience one of the fundamentals of Texas culture! If you have any other BBQ suggestions, please feel free to leave them in the comments below!
