Perry’s Steakhouse Review

Updated: May 28, 2020

NOTE: This review was conducted at the Domain location in Austin, TX in February 2020.

As I approached Perry’s Steakhouse, I was expecting above-average quality. The exterior and interior areas of the restaurant give off a very modern yet classy aesthetic.

However, my experience at Perry’s only declined from there. When our group asked to sit outside, we were seated in the bar area; however, this didn’t bother anyone as there were no windows or doors between the outdoor and indoor sections. Once we started to order drinks, it became apparent that the service quality was poor. While our waitress was very accomodating, the drinks took roughly 30-45 minutes, and the meals followed suit… We ended up spending 3 and a half hours at the restaurant, as our meals (based on my recollection) got to our table roughly 90 to 120 minutes after we ordered. For the appetizers, the prime beef carpaccio was underwhelming, and the meat tasted slightly off. The oysters were also not very good; the one I ate had a weird texture and flavor. However, none of the appetizers made me sick, so they were probably decently fresh.

The entrees, however, were terrible, not including the “famous” Pork Chop, which I didn’t eat because it is not gluten-free (however, the people who had the Pork Chop really like it).

I ordered a Bone-In New York Strip with their 3 sauces and the crab addition; I also ordered the Mushroom, Spinach, and Mashed Potato sides (which can easily be split between 2-3 people). While the sides ranged from mediocre (Mushroom) to decent (Mashed Potatoes and Spinach) for a steak restaurant, the steak was disgusting. I ordered the steak as black and blue (which they call, based on the waitress’s advice, “Philadelphia” (or “Pittsburg” Style)), but the steak was cooked a little over medium-well (so I know that they didn’t think I meant charred). It came with a seasoned butter on top that tasted so salty that I wanted to throw up; I usually put a lot of salt on my steaks, so… I ended up only taking 3 small bites of the steak, which I know is extremely wasteful. The sauces were room temperature and okay at best, and the crab was better but still mediocre. There were other complaints at the table: one mac and cheese wasn’t nearly as cheesy as another one, one steak-like dish (not listed in the steak section of the menu) wasn’t very good, and other people at our table complained about the mushroom side. However, the desert was good; I got the Bananas Foster, which they flamed tableside. Although the ice cream was almost completely melted when I got the dish, it was still very sweet yet salty.

While the desert was good, the steak was refunded, and the gluten-free menu was large, the experience left a bad taste in my mouth...

With so many fantastic restaurants in the Domain, including Flower Child, North Italia, and many other places, I see no reason to choose Perry’s ever again. With so many fantastic steak restaurants in Austin, such as Jeffrey’s, The Capital Grille, and other places I have yet to try, I personally don’t see the appeal of Perry’s (at least the location at the Domain).
