Although I am usually stumped with the lack of GF options at Italian establishments, North Italia is a perfect reminder of why this trend isn't always the case. Created by the owners of Flower Child, North Italia has many options for gluten sensitive customers. From the pasta to the pizza, from the drinks to the appetizers, many of the menu items have gluten-free substitutes. While the restaurant (along with Flower Child) is technically a small chain, the restaurant distances itself from the chain mentality, with nice indoor and outdoor seating arrangements, gourmet cocktails, and stellar presentation.
The main complaint I have is the gluten-free pasta: while it is very good for a gluten-free pasta, it doesn't work with the dishes as well as the gluten pasta (which I had before I discovered my Celiac's Disease). However, this is the only complaint I have about North Italia's gluten-free selection, and it's a weak one at that; although I preferred the options at Flower Child, the restaurant's GF availability is very impressive. A few of my favorite dishes have to be: the Black Mediterranean Mussels (without the bread), the Bolognese (with the GF pasta), and the Bianca or the Pig Pizza (with the GF crust). However, the restaurant also takes a prize for their gluten-free desserts; as the Salted Caramel Budino, the Hazelnut Torta, and the Affogato are all great. Overall, North Italia is a great restaurant for the gluten sensitive, and I would recommend it to all who are struggling to find a good gluten-free Italian restaurant (both the Domain and the Downtown location).
NOTE: North Italia has promised to promote new health guidelines at their locations when the dining rooms open, in addition to guidelines for delivery and take out.
