If I had one GF tip to give: Don’t get the GF bun, get the lettuce wrap. I’m saying this upfront because, in my experience, this is the only problem I have with Hopdoddy’s.
Hopdoddy’s has some great menu items; sure, they are not all the most conventional (especially the “Hot Honey and Sage Fries”), but they all bring a unique perspective on what makes a good hamburger, well, good. From the restaurant’s “Bacon Jam Double” Burger to the “Ahí Tuna” Burger (GF without the Nori chips, I presume; I haven’t tried the burger), the menu has a large variety of food to choose from. That’s what first struck me when I entered the restaurant for my 7th or 8th time (1st time for the review): the flexibility. When you enter the line for the restaurant, you can order drinks from the bar; while the line is long, the wait after you order isn’t.
The food got to our table around 5-10 minutes after we ordered (NOTE: state that you have a gluten allergy if you are GF). I got the “Goodnight/Good Cause Burger”, which had BBQ sauce, jalapeños, and Bacon) on a lettuce wrap, and the “Hot and Honey Sage” Fries. The burger had a kick to it; it was really different. In the past, I’ve also gotten the “Bacon Jam Double” Burger, which was also really good (taking on less of a spicy feel). I got the “Hot Honey and Sage” Fries also. They were SO different than normal French Fries, that they felt like a dessert menu listing; they were also way too spicy with the burger I chose. I would recommend the “Green Chile Queso” Fries or the simple “Sweet Potato” Fries (which come with an amazing sweet Chipotle aioli). Overall, my food was great; the people I ate with loved their food also.
But then, something unexpected came… Their “Bananas Foster” milkshake (that I ordered for dessert) was phenomenal. It was easily one of the best milkshakes I’ve ever had in my life, and the flavor was even better than the Bananas Foster at Perry’s (that I went to the night after). Overall, I really adore Hopdoddy’s: it’s uniqueness, it’s cleanliness, and its variety for GF impressed me. But seriously, the GF bun is not good; get the lettuce wrap, please.
