If you want a unique, exotic, and authentic Mexican food experience, then you have to try ATX Cocina. The best part? EVERYTHING on their menu is gluten-free; in fact, the restaurant's kitchen is gluten-free, so there is no risk for cross-contamination or any substitutions needed. I would highly recommend ATX Cocina to anyone who is gluten-sensitive. From the stellar presentation to the unique dishes available, that are very different from average Tex-Mex experiences, ATX Cocina is by far the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to under the restrictions of gluten-free food.

The restaurant's architecture fits the rustic yet sleek feel that accompanies the presentation of the food. The seating areas give off a lively vibe, which is continued with the restaurant's use of spice and fresh produce in the dishes. One thing to note is the expansive bar and drink menu that is prominent: from tequilas to cocktails, the drink selection is massive. This is because the selection of drinks also adds to the inner-Mexican culture and style that is showcased. I instantly noticed the use of wood to create a smooth and classy yet natural feel that adds to the feeling the restaurant is trying to create, but the real messenger of this style is, of course, the food.
The menu further immersed our group into another culture with its unique design. Instead of categorizing the sections into appetizers and entrees, the menu divides the food into the sections of Nixtamal (tortillas), Crudo (raw seafood), Uno (for one person), Dos (for multiple people), and Lados (sides). The Nixtamal section was my personal favorite; the tortillas were so delicious, even on their own. Combine that with the phenomenal dips, like the Guacamole, which was one of the best guacamoles I have ever eaten, and you have an amazing appetizer selection. The Atun, in the Crudo section, was also really good; with a distinct citrus flavor, it reminded me of a tuna tartare. The other food was really good, but I don't remember what I ate. This is one of the most interesting things about the restaurant; the limited knowledge of the dishes gave my group an almost blind experience, which let us experience food without any preconceived preferences. Yes, the menu provides enough information so that no one will accidentally eat something outside their potential dietary restrictions, but the experience was unexpected. Even the dessert was unusual. I remember the dessert consisting of cream poured over the top, but I don't remember what it was as it was very bizarre, although it was tasty. While the dishes are obscure, the gluten-free kitchen eliminated the usual stresses of going to restaurants. Usually, I have to make sure that I choose a gluten-free meal, but I didn't have to worry at ATX Cocina. That freedom let me fully experience a different genre of food, and that, for me, is the best aspect of the restaurant.
